Johann Elias Schlegel

Bremer Beiträger, group of mid-18th-century German writers, among them Johann Elias Schlegel, who objected to the restrictive, Neoclassical principles laid down in 1730 by Johann Christoph Gottsched, according to which “good” literature was to be produced and judged. They demanded room for the play of genius and inspiration. Their organ was the Bremer Beiträge (1745–48).
