During the late Baroque era, artists in provincial areas in the Spanish viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru produced carved church facades and interiors that, while displaying the overall richness of colour and relief texture typical of Baroque art in the metropolitan centres, had a two-dimensional quality that many call Mestizo, a term referring to the culturally mixed ancestry of the inherited styles.
