Richard Anschütz, August Kekulé, 2 vol. (1929), is an exhaustive study in German of the life and work of Kekule. O. Theodor Benfey (ed.), Kekulé Centennial (1966), collects papers honouring Kekule’s contributions to structural theory. Two worthwhile short biographies are Jean Gillis, “Kekule von Stradonitz, (Friedrich) August,” in Dictionary of Scientific Biography, ed. by Charles Coulson Gillispie, vol. 7, pp. 279–283 (1973); and Alan Rocke, “Kekulé, Butlerov, and the Historiography of the Theory of Chemical Structure,” British Journal for the History of Science, 14:27–57 (1981).
