Baburam Bhattarai (born June 18, 1954, Belbas, Nepal) is a Nepali Marxist scholar, politician, and former guerrilla leader who served as prime minister of Nepal from August 2011 to March 2013. Bhattarai was raised in a small remote village in the vicinity of Gurkha (Gorkha) in central Nepal. His family was poor, but he was an excellent student and was able to attend college in India on scholarship through the Colombo Plan (economic development forum for South and Southeast Asia).
