Barry Levinson (born April 6, 1942, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.) is an American film director and screenwriter known for his versatility. Levinson worked as a comedy writer for Carol Burnett and Mel Brooks in the 1970s. During that time he also cowrote the screenplay for the crime drama …And Justice for All, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. In 1982 Levinson made his directorial debut with Diner (1982), a coming-of-age story that was the first of several movies set in his native city, Baltimore, Maryland.
