Chris Pine

Chris Pine (born August 26, 1980, Los Angeles, California, U.S.) is an American actor who is especially adept at portraying intelligent and world-weary characters. He is perhaps best known for the role of Capt. James T. Kirk in the Star Trek movie series.

Early life and education

Pine was born into a family of actors. His father, Robert Pine, has appeared in films and television shows, and from 1977 to 1983 he had a leading role on the TV crime drama CHiPs, playing Sgt. Joseph Getraer. Pine’s mother, Gwynne Gilford, acted before becoming a therapist, and her notable credits include guest roles on Gunsmoke, One Day at a Time, and Hart to Hart. She also played the wife of Joseph Getraer on six episodes (1979–81) of CHiPs. In addition, Pine’s maternal grandparents, Anne Gwynne and Max M. Gilford, worked in show business: Gwynne appeared in horror films of the 1940s—she has been credited as one of Hollywood’s first “scream queens”—and Gilford briefly worked as an actor and producer before focusing on a legal career.

Chris Pine grew up in the North Hollywood and Studio City neighborhoods of Los Angeles. After graduating from Oakwood High School, he studied English at the University of California, Berkeley. It was during his time at Berkeley that Pine began to act, appearing in local plays. In 2001 he spent the school year as an exchange student at the University of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. After graduating from Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in 2002, Pine began his professional acting career at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. He also studied acting at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater.

Stardom: Star Trek series and Unstoppable

Through his father, Pine began meeting casting directors in Hollywood, and in 2003 he made his TV debut, portraying a drunk patient on the medical drama ER. That year he also had small roles in episodes of The Guardian and CSI: Miami. In 2004 Pine appeared in his first feature film, playing the love interest of Anne Hathaway’s character in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Two years later he starred with Lindsay Lohan in the critically panned romantic comedy Just My Luck. His other films from 2006 include another rom-com, Blind Dating, and the mob drama Smokin’ Aces, in which he appeared in his first action role.

In 2007 Pine turned down a role in an adaptation of James Ellroy’s crime novel White Jazz to play Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’s reboot of the Star Trek series. Star Trek became a box-office hit following its release in 2009, and it helped make Pine a household name. He reprised the role of Kirk in the sequels Star Trek into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). In 2010 he starred alongside Denzel Washington in Tony Scott’s Unstoppable, a popular action-thriller about a runaway train carrying hazardous material. In 2012 Pine returned to the rom-com genre, appearing opposite Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy in This Means War, about spies fighting over a woman. That year Pine also lent his voice to the animated film Rise of the Guardians.

Jack Ryan and superhero movies

In 2014 Pine appeared as the titular character in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s book series about a CIA agent. The film was expected to launch a series, but it was a disappointment at the box office. The same year he appeared in the comedy Horrible Bosses 2 and the film Into the Woods, an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical. Pine later was cast as Toby Howard in the critically acclaimed Hell or High Water (2016), which debuted at the Cannes film festival. The drama, written by Taylor Sheridan, centers on brothers who resort to robbing banks to save the family ranch.

In 2017 Pine played Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, about the comic book heroine. It grossed more than $800 million worldwide, making it Pine’s most successful movie to date. He was especially busy in 2018. That year he had major roles in the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s book A Wrinkle in Time and the historical drama Outlaw King, in which he was cast as Robert the Bruce. He also voiced a version of Peter Parker in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Pine returned to television in 2019, portraying a journalist in the noir miniseries I Am the Night.

In 2020 Pine reprised his role as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984. Released during the COVID-19 pandemic, it failed to match the box-office success of the earlier film. His credits from 2022 include Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling and The Contractor, in which he played a mercenary. Pine later starred in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), an adventure comedy inspired by the role-playing game. That year he also made his directorial debut with Poolman, which he also starred in and cowrote. The comedic mystery, which received negative reviews, centers on a pool cleaner who becomes an amateur sleuth.
