Eduard von Bauernfeld (born Jan. 13, 1802, Vienna, Austria—died Aug. 9, 1890, Vienna) was an Austrian dramatist who dominated the Vienna Burgtheater for 50 years with his politically oriented drawing room comedies. Bauernfeld studied philosophy and law at Vienna University before turning to the theatre. Active in the local liberal movement, he became friends with the composer Franz Schubert and the dramatist Franz Grillparzer; the latter greatly influenced his style. Bauernfeld’s comedies are witty portrayals of Viennese society; cleverly plotted and elegant in language, they also addressed the acute social and political questions of the day.
