George Dewey (born December 26, 1837, Montpelier, Vermont, U.S.—died January 16, 1917, Washington, D.C.) was a U.S. naval commander who defeated the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War (1898). A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1858, Dewey was commissioned a lieutenant three years later. In the U.S. Civil War (1861–65), he served with Union naval forces in the battles of New Orleans (1862) and Port Hudson and Donaldsonville, Louisiana (1863).
