Hormizd IV (died 590) was the king of the Sāsānian empire (reigned 578/579–590); he was the son and successor of Khosrow I. According to one ancient source, Hormizd protected the common people while maintaining severe discipline in his army and court. When the priests demanded a persecution of the Christians, he refused on the grounds that the throne and government could be safe only with the goodwill of both religions. From his father, Hormizd inherited wars against the Byzantine Empire and the Turks.
