Lascăr Catargiu (born Nov. 13, 1823, Iași, Moldavia [now in Romania]—died April 11, 1899, Bucharest, Rom.) was a Romanian statesman, four times prime minister (1866, 1871–76, 1889, 1891–95), who played a leading role in national affairs through the country’s early years of independence. In 1858 Catargiu served on the Moldavian divan ad hoc (representative commission) formed to determine the future political organization of the Danubian principalities—Moldavia and Walachia—and in 1859 was the Conservative candidate for the throne of Moldavia.
