Margaret Murie (born August 18, 1902, Seattle, Washington, U.S.—died October 19, 2003, Moose, Wyoming) was an American naturalist, conservationist, and writer who was a central contributor in efforts to establish the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, which earned her the popular title “grandmother of the conservation movement.” When Murie was a young girl, her family moved from Seattle to Fairbanks, Alaska, where her stepfather had been appointed an assistant U.S. attorney.
