Maximilian Franz August von Forckenbeck (born October 21, 1821, Münster, Westphalia [Germany]—died May 26, 1892, Berlin, Germany) was a prominent leader of the 19th-century German National Liberal Party. Elected to the Prussian Chamber of Deputies in 1858, Forckenbeck subsequently helped found the left-liberal German Progressive Party (1861), which after 1862 spearheaded the continuing constitutional struggle over the state military budget with the Prussian prime minister—later to become German imperial chancellor—Otto von Bismarck. In 1866, however, Forckenbeck seceded from the Progressives to join the new National Liberal Party, and thereafter, along with most of his party colleagues, he increasingly accommodated himself ...(100 of 163 words)
