Paulus Buys (born 1531, Amersfoort, Utrecht province, Neth.—died May 4, 1594, IJsselstein) was a Dutch statesman who, as advocate (provincial executive) of Holland (1572–85), helped the province achieve its preeminent role in the revolt of the Netherlands against Spanish rule. The harsh religious persecution and high taxes of the Duke of Alba’s regime (1567–73) led Buys to join the resistance to the Spanish government, working closely with William I the Silent, prince of Orange, to plan a revolt in the northern provinces.
