Richard Diebenkorn (born April 22, 1922, Portland, Oregon, U.S.—died March 30, 1993, Berkeley, Calif.) was an American Modernist painter credited with elevating the status of California art. He was often indifferent toward current trends and reflected in his work the influences of such diverse artists as Henri Matisse, Edward Hopper, Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, Willem de Kooning, and Paul Cézanne. Though interested in art from an early age, Diebenkorn was urged to pursue a more stable career.
