Roy Wilkins (born August 30, 1901, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.—died September 8, 1981, New York, New York) was a Black American civil rights leader who served as the executive director (1955–77) of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was often referred to as the senior statesman of the American civil rights movement. After graduation from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (1923), Wilkins became a reporter and later managing editor of the Kansas City Call, a newspaper serving the Black community.
