Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova (born Oct. 9 [Oct. 21, New Style], 1894, Kovno, Lithuania, U.S.S.R. [now Kaunas, Lith.]—died May 20, 1958, Moscow, Russia) was a noted figure of the Russian avant-garde who was a multitalented artist (painter and graphic, book, and theatrical set designer) and the wife of fellow artist Aleksandr Rodchenko. Stepanova, like Rodchenko, was somewhat younger than the other artists of their group, which included Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, Lyubov Popova, and Nadezhda Udaltsova.
