Bojnūrd, city, capital of North Khorāsān province, northeastern Iran.

The precise date and circumstances of Bojnūrd’s founding are unknown, but it is generally believed that the city’s first settlements were established sometime during the Ṣafavid era (1502–1736). No structures from that period remain, though, because much of the city had to be rebuilt after earthquakes in 1896 and 1929. The modern city is ethnically diverse, with communities of Kurds, Turkmens, and Persians. Industries in Bojnūrd include steel, chemicals, and food products. Pop. (2011) 199,790.
