Brainerd, city, seat of Crow Wing county, central Minnesota, U.S. It is situated in a forest and lake-resort region south of the Cuyuna Range along the Mississippi River, about 60 miles (95 km) north of St. Cloud. The area was inhabited by Ojibwa Indians when it was visited in 1805 by explorer Zebulon Montgomery Pike. Founded in 1870 as a Mississippi River crossing by the Northern Pacific Railway, the city was given the maiden name of the wife of the railroad owner, John G. Smith.
