Bristol, city, on the border of Virginia (Washington county) and Tennessee (Sullivan county), U.S., in an extension of the Shenandoah Valley. Although physically, culturally, and economically unified, administratively it comprises two separate cities, each with its own government, public schools, utilities, and post office. In 1771 a trading post and fort were built on the site, a former Cherokee village, to serve westward travelers over the Wilderness Road blazed by frontiersman Daniel Boone.
