Cannonball River, river that rises in the Badlands of southwestern North Dakota, U.S., and flows southeast to join Cedar Creek at the edge of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. It then turns northeast to enter the Missouri River south of Bismarck after a course of 295 miles (475 km). The name may have been suggested by the spheroidal rocks found near its banks.
