Cárdenas, city, west-central Cuba. It is located on a large bay on the island’s north shore and is sheltered by the long Hicacos Peninsula.

Cárdenas was founded in 1828 and grew steadily after nearby marshes were drained. It is now one of Cuba’s chief sugar ports. The city’s industries include sugar refineries, rum distilleries, and factories manufacturing rope from henequen. Playa Varadero, Cuba’s main luxury beach-resort complex, lies about 8 miles (12 km) north-northwest of Cárdenas. Pop. (2002) 80,832; (2011 est.) 87,900.
