Chambeshi River, river in northeastern Zambia. It rises in hills on the Tanzanian border and flows 300 miles (480 km) southwest to the Lake Bangweulu swamps. The swamps act as a check to the annual flooding, releasing the flood waters slowly through a myriad of channels and lagoons, to issue as the Luapula River where the slope increases once more.
