Cobija, town and river port, northwestern Bolivia.

Cobija, founded in 1906, lies on the Acre River in the hot, humid Amazon River basin across from the town of Brasiléia, Brazil, 380 miles (612 km) north of La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital. The town trades in Brazil nuts (its main economic activity), rice, bananas, and other local tropical products. Cobija has an airport. During the dry season (April to October), La Paz is accessible by road. Pop. (2001) 20,820; (2010 prelim.) 41,900.
