From prehistoric times people have dwelled in the area around Dublin Bay, and four of Ireland’s five great roads converged near the spot called Baile Átha Cliath, the name stamped by Dublin’s postmark. Dublin appeared in Ptolemy’s Geōgraphikē hyphēgēsis (Guide to Geography; c. 140 ce), and some 150 years later “the people of Dublin,” it was recorded, defeated an army from the province of Leinster. Yet, despite indications of habitation 2,000 years ago, the first settlement for which there is historical proof was not Celtic but Norse.
