Fujinomiya, city, southern Shizuoka ken (prefecture), central Honshu, Japan. It lies at the western foot of Mount Fuji, about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Fuji city. It developed around the Sengen (Asama) Shrine, the main Shintō shrine for the worship of Mount Fuji since the 9th century. During the early part of the Edo (Tokugawa) period (1603–1867), the shogun (military ruler) Tokugawa Ieyasu built an inner shrine, a hall of worship, and a main torii (symbolic gate).
