Ialomiƫa River, river, rising on Mount Omu in the Munƫii Bucegi, part of the Transylvanian Alps (Southern Carpathians), central Romania, and flowing southward and eastward for 250 miles (400 km) to join the Lower Danube just west of Hîrşova. The upper Ialomiƫa Valley receives much water from the mountains, and its upstream flow is rapid. One of Romania’s earliest hydroelectric stations is at Moroeni. On the Danube Plain the Ialomiƫa is joined by its main tributary, the Prahova. The Ialomiƫa drainage basin covers an area of 3,426 square miles (8,873 square km). ...(100 of 92 words)
