Inveraray, royal burgh (town), Argyll and Bute council area, historic county of Argyllshire, Scotland, on Loch Fyne on the Atlantic coast near the mouth of the River Aray. It was made a royal burgh in 1648. Inveraray was the ancestral seat of the Campbells of Argyll and was rebuilt by them in the 18th century, its architectural style reflecting the elegance of the period. The buildings are now officially preserved. The castle, which was constructed in French château style in the 1740s, was damaged by fire in 1975, and many art treasures were lost.
