Itbāy, mountainous region of southeastern Egypt and the northeastern part of Sudan, paralleling the Red Sea. It lies largely south of Egypt’s administrative boundary with Sudan and separates the coastal lowland of the Red Sea from the Nile River valley. The north-south–trending mountain chains in the Itbāy region are called the Red Sea Hills.
