Jacareí, city, eastern São Paulo estado (state), Brazil. It lies along the Paraíba do Sul River, 45 miles (70 km) northeast of São Paulo city. The settlement was granted town status in 1653 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1849. Local agriculture depends upon dairying, but coffee, rice, corn (maize), fruits, and feijão (beans) are also cultivated in the surrounding area. The city’s main industries include the processing of food and chemicals, distilling, metallurgy, and the manufacture of furniture. Jacareí has an airfield, and it is linked by rail and road to São Paulo. It is also easily accessible from nearby São José dos Campos, to which it is virtually adjacent. Pop. (2010) 211,214.
