Katanning, town, southwestern Western Australia. It is located approximately 95 miles (150 km) north of Albany and 155 miles (250 km) southeast of Perth in the state’s Great Southern region. Although sandalwood cutters had been in the area for some time, there was no permanent settlement until the arrival of the railroad there in the late 19th century. The town was laid out in 1898 and probably derives its name from the Aboriginal term kartannin (“meeting place”).
