Kegalle, town, west-central Sri Lanka. Kegalle lies at the bottom of a steep rock face and is the site of a junior technical college. The surrounding region produces graphite, precious stones, rubber, and agricultural products, including rice. Nearby is the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, which was established by the government to raise abandoned or orphaned wild elephants. Pop. (2007 est.) 18,113.
