La Salle, city, La Salle county, north-central Illinois, U.S. It lies on the Illinois River, about 90 miles (150 km) southwest of Chicago. With Peru (adjacent to the west) and Oglesby (southeast), La Salle forms a tri-city unit. The city was named for the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, sieur (lord) de La Salle, who built a fort nearby in 1682. Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet had passed through the area, then inhabited by Illinois Indians, in 1673.
