Also known as: Lake Shalla
Shala also spelled:
Shalla

Lake Shala, lake in south-central Ethiopia, lying in the Great Rift Valley. It is some 16 miles (26 km) long and 12 miles (19 km) wide, and in parts it exceeds a depth of 850 feet (260 metres). The lake has no outlet and its water is saline. A hot spring situated in the lake’s northeastern corner is a popular attraction. Hornbills, starlings, sparrow-weavers, and other bird species thrive in the woodlands nearby. Lake Shala, along with neighbouring Lake Abiyata, is part of Lake Abiyata–Shala National Park, where more than 300 species of bird have been recorded.
