Loxton, town, southeastern South Australia. It lies along the Murray River approximately 150 miles (240 km) east of Adelaide in the area known as the Riverland and is the service centre for an extensive irrigated fruit-raising area. Major European settlement of the region began in 1894, and the town of Loxton, named for William Loxton, a boundary rider at a nearby sheep station (ranch), was proclaimed in 1907. In 1997 the local government of Loxton combined with those of Waikerie and Browns Well to form the Loxton Waikerie District Council.
