Madīnat al-Shaʿb, town, southern Yemen, former administrative capital of Yemen (Aden). The town is located on the Little Aden Peninsula on the western side of Al-Tawāhī Bay (Aden Harbour), across from Aden city. It was founded in 1959 as Al-Ittiḥād (Arabic: “Unity”) and was at first the capital of the Protectorate of South Arabia under British rule. It was renamed after Yemen (Aden) was founded in 1967.
