Morant Bay, town, southeastern Jamaica, located at the mouth of the Morant River, east-southeast of Kingston. It is a resort and a shipping point for bananas, coffee, allspice (pimento), ginger, coconuts, copra, honey, and rum. Many of the early public buildings, including the Morant Bay Courthouse, were burned in the riots of 1865, during which the chief magistrate of the parish and 18 other Europeans were killed. The ruthless suppression of the rioters under martial law led to indignation in England and the recall of the Jamaican governor, Edward John Eyre. In February 2007 the courthouse was again destroyed in a fire, although its burned-out brick walls remained standing. A statue of Paul Bogle, leader of the 1865 rebellion, which had stood in front of the courthouse, was damaged in the fire and was later removed for restoration. Pop. (2011) urban area, 11,052.
