Nashville, town, seat of Brown county, south-central Indiana, U.S., 40 miles (64 km) south of Indianapolis. It was founded in 1836 as the county seat and was called Jacksonburg, but it was renamed in 1837 for Nashville, Tennessee. It is headquarters for one of the Midwest’s most noted art colonies, whose heyday is documented by Lyn Letsinger-Miller in The Artists of Brown County (1994).
