Ózd
Hungary
Ózd, city, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megye (county), northern Hungary. It is 19 miles (30 km) west-northwest of Miskolc in the hill country to the north of the Bükk highland, close to the frontier with Slovakia. Formerly a small village on the south bank of Hangony stream, just above its confluence with the Sajó River, where small quantities of iron had been made since the 18th century, it has developed rapidly as an industrial settlement and iron and steel producing centre. When, with the end of the communist system, state subsidies for heavy industry were abolished, Ózd became a crisis zone with an extremely high unemployment rate. Pop. (2011) 34,481; (2017 est.) 32,827.
