Pelotas River, river in southern Brazil, rising on the western slope of the Serra Geral at Alto do Bispo in Santa Catarina estado (state), on the Atlantic coast. It arches northwestward across the uplands for approximately 280 miles (450 km) before receiving the Canoas River and becoming the Uruguay River (q.v.) near Marcelino Ramos. It forms much of the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states and is used for navigation.
