Penonomé, city, west-central Panama, on the Pacific coastal lowland. The original Spanish settlement was founded on the ruins of an ancient Indian town on the Zaratí River. The city is now a commercial centre through which the rubber, coffee, and cacao produced in the region are shipped; soap and Panama hats are manufactured as well. The city lies on the Inter-American (Pan-American) Highway. Pop. (2000) 15,841; (2010) 21,748.
