Port Hueneme, city and seaport terminal, Ventura county, southwestern California, U.S. Lying about 60 miles (100 km) northwest of Los Angeles and 40 miles (65 km) south of Santa Barbara, it is the only commercial deepwater port between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Founded in 1874 by Thomas R. Bard as Hueneme (Chumash Indian: “Halfway”), it did not develop until 1940, when its man-made deepwater harbour was opened as Port Hueneme. In 1942 the federal government established the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion (Seabee) Center for Pacific operations; the Seabee Museum (1947) is a popular local attraction.
