Red Deer

Red Deer, city, central Alberta, Canada, on the Red Deer River, midway between Calgary (90 miles [145 km] south) and Edmonton. Original settlement began around a ford where the trail from Calgary to Edmonton crossed the river (Red Deer Crossing), a little west of the present site. A militia post, Fort Normandeau, was built there during the North West Rebellion (1885); a reconstruction of the fort now serves as a museum. In 1891 the railway reached the river, and a community developed around the railway station. It grew as the processing and distribution centre for a productive mixed-farming region.
