Rhône-Alpes, former région of France. As a région, it encompassed the southeastern départements of Loire, Rhône, Ain, Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Isère, Drôme, and Ardèche. In 2016 the Rhône-Alpes région was joined with the région of Auvergne to form the new administrative entity of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The Massif Central extends into Ardèche and is separated by a series of valleys from the Alps to the east.
