Salamanca, city, south-central Guanajuato estado (state), central Mexico. It lies on the Lerma River at an elevation of 5,647 feet (1,721 metres) above sea level. Salamanca is an important agricultural and commercial centre, and its central location in the fertile Bajío region led to its being called the “Granary of Mexico.” Wheat, corn (maize), beans, chickpeas, and fruits all thrive in the temperate climate. The city is a prominent industrial centre with a major petroleum refinery as well as flour and textile mills, tanneries, chemical plants, and potteries. Salamanca is also a transportation centre, where both a railroad branch line and a highway join the Mexico City–Ciudad Juárez routes. Pop. (2010) 160,169; (2020) 160,682.
