Skierniewice, city, Łódzkie województwo (province), central Poland. It is located 45 miles (72 km) southwest of Warsaw. First chronicled in 1360, Skierniewice received its city rights in 1457. In 1793 it fell to the Prussians. During the 19th century it was successively under German and Russian influence; it became part of Poland in 1918. The city’s economy is based on the textile industry (dating from the 17th century as a dressmakers’ centre) and the manufacture of farm machinery and electronic products.
