Sukabumi, kota (city), West Java (Jawa Barat) propinsi (or provinsi; province), western Indonesia. It lies at the foot of Mount Pangrango 50 miles (80 km) south of Jakarta, the national capital. Roads and railways link Sukabumi with the cities of Bogor and Jakarta to the north and Bandung to the east. The population is mostly Sundanese with a notable Chinese and Peranakan Chinese (of mixed Indonesian and Chinese ancestry) minority. Rubber plantations occupy the surrounding hilly terrain, and the city is a trading and transshipment centre for locally produced agricultural commodities, including rice, corn (maize), cassava, and copra. Industries produce textiles, machinery, processed food, and milled rice. Crafts include wood carving, batik making, kris (Indonesian dagger) forging, and mat and basket weaving. Located at an elevation of 1,970 feet (600 metres), Sukabumi is renowned as a health resort and is visited by Indonesian and foreign tourists. Pop. (2010) 298,681.
