Also known as: Ban Don

Surat Thani, city, southern Thailand, on the Malay Peninsula. Locally the city is called Ban Don. It is a port at the head of the Ta Pi River delta near the Gulf of Thailand and a station on the Bangkok-Singapore railway. The surrounding area is important for its production of tin, fish, rice, and coconuts. The city is an access point to resort islands in the gulf and other nearby tourist attractions. Pop. (2000) 111,276.
