Tarnobrzeg, city, Podkarpackie województwo (province), southeastern Poland. Located on the eastern bank of the Vistula River on trade routes linking Warsaw to the cities of southeastern Poland, Tarnobrzeg has long been a leading centre of manufacturing and commerce.

Tarnobrzeg received city rights in 1593. After the early 1950s it grew rapidly because of the discovery of sulfur deposits on the outskirts of the city; the deposits are among the richest in the world. Its economy is based on food processing and the manufacture of machine tools. In the 1990s, however, the city’s economy fell into decline, and in 1997 a special economic zone was established there to restructure its traditional industry. Pop. (2011) 48,821.
