Tenterfield, town, northeastern New South Wales, Australia. It lies in the New England Range section of the Eastern Highlands. Founded in 1848 and named for the Scottish homestead of an early settler, it was gazetted a town in 1851 and a municipality in 1871. In 1889 Australian statesman Sir Henry Parkes delivered a speech there in favour of federation that increased momentum toward the creation of the Australian Commonwealth. Tenterfield is linked to Brisbane and Sydney by rail and is the service centre of a region producing dairy products, beef, lambs, apples, tobacco, honey, tin, silver, and lead. Pop.
