Article History

Washington, city, seat of Beaufort county, eastern North Carolina, U.S., along the Pamlico-Tar estuary just east of Greenville. Founded by Colonel James Bonner in 1771 and originally known as Forks of Tar River, it was one of the first places in the United States to be named (December 7, 1776) for George Washington. During the American Civil War it was occupied by Union troops (1862–64), who burned it as they left. Fighting took place at Hills Point, 7 miles (11 km) downriver, where the Union steamer Louisiana was sunk by the Confederates.
